MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) — The Mobile County Health Department is helping pet owners get their dogs, cats, and ferrets protected against rabies at their low-cost rabies clinics.

The Alabama Public Health notes that the vaccine that is required by law is important because “rabies is preventable if proper treatment is given before symptoms occur, but is fatal once symptoms are present.”

In order to help protect pets from the virus, the MCHD offers low-cost clinics each month. In April, MCHD reported that they provided 154 vaccinations for pets.

Below are the dates and times for low-cost rabies clinics available in May:

  • May 4 from 10 a.m. to noon: Little Flower Catholic School, 2103 Government Street in Mobile
  • May 11 from 10 a.m. to noon: Mobile County Animal Shelter, 7665 Howells Ferry Road in Mobile
  • May 11 from 1 to 3 p.m.: Pet Supplies Plus, 803 Hillcrest Road in Mobile
  • May 18 from 1 to 3 p.m.: Saint Elmo Feed & Seed Store, 9001 Highway 90 West
  • May 25 from 9 a.m. to noon: Hosted by Prichard Animal Shelter at 2402 West Rebel Road (the clinic will be in the Prichard Municipal Stadium parking lot)
  • May 25 from 1 to 3 p.m.: B&B Pet Stop, 5035 Cottage Hill Road in Mobile

The above clinics will be drive-through style and cost $12 per pet. All rabies shots are payable in cash, according to the release. Once the shots are given, they last for one year.
