FROM LETOURNEAU UNIVERSITY:

LONGVIEW, TX– LeTourneau University recently placed one of its computer programing teams in the Top 10 national rankings in the IEEEXtreme 11.0 programming competition.  In the competition, students compete against each other from across the globe to solve a set of programming challenges. The competition is organized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the world's largest professional association for the advancement of technology

LETU's top team, "LETU1," won 1st place in the Southwestern region, 8th place nationally, and 161st out of 3,350 teams worldwide.

Team members are computer science engineering major Azrael Brown of Duncanville, Texas; computer science engineering major Chandler Griscom, of Coatesville, Pennsylvania; and computer science network security major Brian Scott of Anniston, Alabama.

Faculty sponsor for the IEEE event was Dr. Joonwan Kim, professor of electrical engineering.

"These computer science majors are making the most of their time at LETU by taking advantage of unique opportunities like this that the School of Engineering offers our students," said Dr. Brent Baas, chair of LETU's Computer Science Department. "The active engagement of engineering with other areas on campus is an LETU distinctive.  It's a statement to the world-class students we have in our programs."

The competition presents teams with 30 unique programming challenges designed to test their skills in program design and analysis. Some of the skills tested include analyzing task requirements, identifying the appropriate solution, and testing the program to ensure that it meets all the problem requirements based on feedback from the online judging system. Teams could have from one to three people and were required to work independently of each other.

IEEE has more than 395,000 members in more than 160 countries and more than 90,000 student members. It sponsors more than 1,100 conferences in 73 countries annually.
