Azerbaijan launched the production of unmanned vehicles or drones, recently gaining popularity worldwide.

Drones, managing with various degrees of autonomy, originated mostly in military applications, although their use is expanding in commercial, scientific, recreational, agricultural, and other spheres.

Recently, the High Technologies Park of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS HTP) launched the manufacture of six new types of UAVs, according to director of HTP Vugar Babayev.

“A young and experienced team has been brought together in a short time at the ANAS HTP. The process of production of UAVs continues apace and is already nearing completion,” he told APA, adding that their tests were successful.

HTP director specified that five of the UAVs are multi-rotary and one is of aircraft type. These UAVs are planned to be used in several areas; for irrigation and spraying plants in agriculture, for ecological monitoring, afforestation, aerial photography as well as cartography for three-dimensional maps.

Babayev added that in modern times UAVs are used in all areas, adding that drones produced in the Park are mostly of a civilian and military nature.

“Examples include ambulance, postal services, search and rescue and fire extinguishing services of the Emergency Situations Ministry, aerial photography, etc,” he said.

Touching upon the parameters of the UAVs, Babayev said that they vary depending on the model: “The estimated parameters are as follows: flight time up to 30 minutes, load capacity 0.5 kilograms, and speed limit up to 35 km/h.” He added that the official names for the UAVs have not been set yet.

Noting that the HTP has already received orders from some state structures, the director said that currently negotiations are held with Azerbaijan State Oil Company SOCAR, and UAVs will be produced in accordance with their requirements.

“Currently, test flights are carried out jointly with SOCAR. A presentation will be held in the near future,” he noted.

Babayev also talked about innovations expected in the High Technologies Park. Although short time has passed since the establishment of ANAS HTP, the Park achieved success in several areas. There are already seven residents operating in the techno-park, and the company has launched projects jointly with several foreign companies and local government agencies,” he said.

The head of Park also noted that it closely cooperates with the leading techno-parks of the world, and gives impetus to the unification of science and business in Azerbaijan.
