KUCHING: Gerald Kerry Gimang, 15, from MRSM Kuching, is the sole participant from Sarawak who will join five others to represent Malaysia at the International Junior Science Olympiad in Botswana this December.

Gerald said he was nervous at first but also hoped that Malaysia would place Top 10 as it is the first time the country is participating in the international event.

“I started by taking part in the Kancil Science Competition in June at my school. I won silver, then I advanced to the next level at the Malaysia Junior Science Olympiad in UTM KL. In Kuala Lumpur, only six of us were picked from 60 finalists nationwide,” he said when interviewed at the closing of the Sarawak Islamic Creativity and Innovations Festival 2018 in Aeon Mall yesterday.

To prepare for the competition, the finalists would have to undergo training camp at Universiti Malaya on Nov 26.

Assistant Minister of Rural Electricity Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi officiated at the opening of the six-day festival, which ended yesterday. It was organised by the Sarawak Islamic Information Centre (IIC).

Themed ‘Green & Arts’, the event included open space sharing, workshops, demonstrations, performances, book drop station and many others.

During the ceremony, Dr Abdul Rahman launched the Wakaf Ilmu Online and presented it to shopping centres in the city.
